ABSTRACT

Abstract Using a cross-sectional, non-experimental design, the hypothesis that the mental health state of assessed immigrants differs according to the acculturation strategy used, was tested. To this end, the mean difference in physiological symptoms, social roles and relationships among participants categorized by type of acculturation strategy, i.e. bicultural integration, separation, isolation and assimilation, was evaluated. The sample consisted of 431 Peruvian and Colombian immigrants, residing in the city of Antofagasta, Chile. To evaluate acculturation, the Revised Acculturation Attitudes Scale by Basabe, Zlovina and Paez was used, and for the mental health assessment, the Self-Assessment Questionnaire OQ-45.2 was applied. Findings show that separation was the most commonly used strategy by Colombians, while in the Peruvian population it was assimilation. Similarly, the Colombian population reported a greater presence of symptoms of mental health problems in all dimensions and in the overall scale than the Peruvian population. In the overall sample, the individuals who used assimilation as their acculturation strategy tended to report more symptoms and difficulties in interpersonal relationships. The data provide evidence that the acculturation strategies used result in a greater or lesser presence of psychopathological symptoms.

ABSTRACT

Abstract: Introduction: Non-adherence to antipsychotic medication remains a complex problem in the treatment of schizophrenia patients, especially in indigenous population. Objective: The aim of the study was to assess the differences in drug adherence, measured by the attitude towards the antipsychotics among Aymara and Non-Aymara patients with schizophrenia. Method: The sample consisted of patients receiving treatment in the Mental Health Public Services in Bolivia (32.8%), Peru (33.6%) and Chile (33.6%). We used the Drug Attitude Inventory (DAI-10); the Barnes Akathisia Scale (BAS), as a measure of side effects, and the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) to assess the severity of the disorder. Results: The findings showed that Aymara patients present less adherence than Non-Aymara people; however, these differences were not significant (t = 1.29; p = 0.19). The severity of the disorder, as well as the age, showed a significant association with adherence, revealing that younger patients and with greater symptoms presented a more negative attitude toward the drugs. Discussion and conclusion: The lack of significant differences between the groups responds to three possible reasons: 1. This sample of indigenous patients is integrated on Mental Health Services that offer a clear biomedical approach where drug therapy is the primary treatment. 2. It is possible that these indigenous patients are changing their conception of mental disorder, and 3. A significant number of families have migrated to urban areas. These migratory dynamics have promoted the loss of traditions and customs of the ethnic group, which gradually adopts new and intercultural lifestyles. Professionals should be warned about applying stereotypes regarding the relationship between ethnicity and antipsychotics.

ABSTRACT

Background: Coping with changes brought about by immigration and social circumstances that often characterize this process may cause mental health problems. Aim: To analyze the relationship between acculturation stress and mental health symptoms in South American immigrants residing in Antofagasta, Chile. Material and Methods: The OQ questionnaire, which assesses mental health and the acculturation stress questionnaire from Ruiz, were answered by 431 immigrants (53.8% Colombian and 46.2% Peruvian) aged between 18 and 65 years old. Results: The major source of acculturation stress was distance from origin, followed by difficulties in social relationships and perceived discrimination and rejection. About 50% of respondents had elevated levels of discomfort in their life, with mental health problems derived from their adjustment to social roles and relationships. There was a high correlation between acculturation stress levels and severity of mental health symptoms. Conclusions: Immigrants are exposed to high levels of stress resulting in a negative impact on their mental health.

ABSTRACT

Under a not experimental, analytical cross-sectional desing, this study describes the relation between the acculturation strategies introduced by Berry, integration, assimilation, separation and marginalization, with the ethnic identity. Data was collected from 431 peruvians and colombians immigrants in the city of Antofagasta, Chile, using the acculturation scale developed by Basabe, Zlobina and Páez, (2004) and the spanish version of the Multigroup Ethnic Identity Measure (MEIM). The results concludes that biculturality was the most used acculturation strategy for both groups although differences were found for sex. For ethnic identity, differences were statistically significant for both groups only between nationalities. Analysing the existent relation between the variables, the tests concludes in favor for theoretical assumptions that people who choose for a "loyalty to ingroup" acculturation strategy (biculturals and separated) has a higher positive orientation to his/her own ethnic group, instead people who use a "individualistic" strategy (assimilated and marginated)

ABSTRACT

Background: The Diabetes Mellitus 2 treatment adherence scale version III (EATDM-III) was devised in Costa Rica. Its seven factors are family support, community organization and support, physical exercise, medical control, hygiene and self-care and assessment of physical condition. Aim: To assess the psychometric properties of the scale in Chilean patients. Material and Methods: The results of the EATDM-III scale, applied to 274 patients with Diabetes Mellitus 2 aged 59 ± 11 years (59% women), were analyzed. Reliability, item, exploratory and confirmatory factorial analyses were carried out both in the initial and the proposed model. Results: We propose a version of 30 items grouped in six dimensions, improving the fit indices obtained with the original scale. The review of item factor loadings shows that all are appropriate both in magnitude and statistical significance, with values between 0.46 and 0.93. Internal consistency measured by Cronbach s alpha, was 0.85 for the total scale. Conclusions: The adapted EATDM-III scale is reliable and can be used to assess treatment adherence in Chilean patients.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To describe capabilities and difficulties in emotional adjustment experienced by children living in the Chilean Aymara city of Arica. Patients and Method: 610 students between 5th and 8th grade, in addition to their parents and teachers were surveyed using the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ), comparing Aymara children to those without indigenous heritage. 25 items divided into five scales were evaluated: Emotional, behavioral problems, hyperactivity, relationship problems with peers and prosocial behaviors, classifying the respondents into three levels, Normal, Border and Abnormal. Results: There were no significant differences among the groups studied, where discrepancies in almost all cases show a slight effect (d ≥ -0.2-). Also, no relevant effects were observed regarding the type of assessor on the assessment of each dimension. Despite this, it was observed that Aymara children showed lower scores than their peers in "behavioral problems" according to their teachers, but this difference was also mild (partial η2> 0.01). Conclusions: Aymara Children showed similar strengths and difficulties than non-Aymara students in situations that require emotional adjustment.

ABSTRACT

This study sought to examine the validity and reliability of the Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale Spanish version (DERS-S) in chilean population. This is a self-report instrument that measures difficulties in emotion regulation in adults. Two samples were evaluated: one composed of 1018 university students and the second one composed of 1161 participants from general population. Individuals completed the DERSE and Outcome Questionnaire OQ-45.2. Reliability indices were adequate in both samples and the factor structure consistent with the spanish version adaptation. In addition, there were differences in emotional regulation difficulties according to socio-emotional adjustment. The results confirmed that the psychometric properties of the DERS-E make it a reliable and valid instrument to assess difficulties in emotion regulation.

ABSTRACT

Background: The real value of quality of life instruments must be tested in local populations before recommending their widespread use. Aim: To assess the factorial structure of the quality of life questionnaire proposed by the World Health Organization (WHO), WHOQoL-Bref. Material and Methods: The questionnaire was answered by 2016 individuals aged between 20 and 59 years, from diverse public and social organizations of a city in Northern Chile. The confidence and factorial structure of the instrument were evaluated. Results: The internal consistency of the instrument, according to Cronbach's alpha was 0.89. The adjustment of values to a model with four factors proposed by the WHO was moderate. The root mean square (RMS) and root mean square error of approximation (RMSEA) values of0.043 and 0.061, indicate a good adjustment of the model. Conclusions: Although an absolute adjustment for the theoretical four factor model is not supported by these results, the WHOQoL-Bref is able to discriminate the perception of quality of life and the influence of age, gender and disease on this perception.

ABSTRACT

The high prevalence of obesity in children supports the need to implement preventive actions such as the development of programs to promote healthy food intake. Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of radio capsules in developing a positive attitude towards healthy eating in children. Method: Under an experimental design with control group, were assessed using a scale attitudinal differences bifactorial pre and post intervention in two groups. The average age of each group was 10 years. In the experimental group 28 children participated in the pre-intervention assessment and 22 in the post intervention; in the control group 36 students participated in the pre-intervention assessment and 32 in post evaluation. Results: The factor attitude toward healthy eating, and healthy behaviors decreased in the control group, while in the experimental group there was a slight increase in the average factor both in attitude and behavior factor. The only statistically significant differences between the averages of the measurements before and after the intervention in the control group, were in both attitude factor (t (66) = -3.108, p = .003) compared to the behavior factor (t (65) = -3.350, P = .001). Conclusions: Students exposed to radio capsules had increased awareness of healthy eating, while the control group decreased significantly positive attitude towards healthy eating in both factors studied.

ABSTRACT

Background: Usually quality of life self-reports are standard and consider that all the areas evaluated are equally important. Aim: To explore the influence of specific domains on the overall quality of life self-assessment. Material and Methods: The brief version of the quality of life questionnaire developed by the World Health Organization (WHOQoL bref) was applied to 1229 participants aged 19 to 60 years (53% women). The questionnaire explores four domains: physical and psychological health, social relationships and environment. At the end of each domain a new question asking the participant to assess the importance of the domain, using a scale of 1 (not important) to 5 (very important), was added. The analysis of data considered the assessment of the importance of each domain made by participants. The weight of each domain was analyzed using regression equations. Results: The physical health had the best evaluation followed by the social domain. The environmental domain received the lower evaluation. Among women, social domain was the best evaluated domain and among men, the physical health domain. According to participants, physical and psychological health had the higher weight. The environmental domain had the higher weight on the overall assessment of quality of life. Conclusions: According to participants, physical and psychological health are the most important aspects that influence overall quality of life.

ABSTRACT

Background: The quality of life in children is associated with their experiences, family and their socio-cultural environment. Objective: To identify the significant components in assessing quality of life from the children's perception. Participants and Method: Using a cross-sectional design, the Child Life Quality Scale was applied to a total of 200 children aged 8-12 years, from an urban and a rural area located in northern Chile. Three open questions were presented about experiences of satisfaction, dissatisfaction and desire for change, classifying the answers in six categories. Results: No significant differences in the perception of quality of life in children from urban and rural areas were found, however, the evaluation of the content of the answers allowed us to establish some differences between the two groups. Conclusion: In the urban area, the greatest experiences of satisfaction level were associated with interpersonal relationships, while in the rural area, with leisure and recreational activities.

ABSTRACT

The scale of psychological well-being arises from the multidimensional model proposed by Ryff (1989). Despite its wide use, its initial theoretical structure has not been completely confirmed because other factorial solutions which are different from those 6 dimensions proposed by the author have been found. These differences may be related to the type of sample and population used. Given this fact, the current study compares the adjustment factor of correction models traditionally used in different groups of adults. We describe the psychometric properties of the Spanish adaptation done by Díaz et al. (2006) and analyze the levels of reliability (internal consistency and temporal stability) and confirmatory factorial structure with data from 1,646 people aged from 18 to 90 years old. Differences are found in the indicators of reliability for the total scale and its dimensions as well as in the indicators of goodness of fit depending on the age group. The model that presents the best indicators of adjustment for most age ranges evaluated was the one of six first-order factors.

ABSTRACT

The Social Comparison Orientation (SCO) is the personal disposition of individuals prone to social comparison. The aim of this study was to analyze the SCO at different ages in men and women. The main hypothesis is that the average is higher in SCO younger age ranges and decreases as age increases. Participants 2757 people between 10 and 88 years of age in the city ofAntofagasta, which were assessed with a questionnaire INCOM - E. The results show a significant decrease in the mean SCO with increasing age ranges. It is also found that the average SCO is significantly higher in men than in women. The scope of this study open up new lines of research and the implications of gender constructions in the SCO.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this investigation is to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS), in the adult population from ages 18 to 65. In order to do this two studies were conducted. In the first one, we evaluated the internal consistency and construct validation of data from 330 people between 18 and 52 years of age; in the second study, we evaluated the confirmatory factor and validation of data indicators from 1157 people between 18 and 65 years of age. The results show suitable indicators of internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha = 0.82), the exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis finds a one factor's solution. The correlation between the SWLS, the WHOQOL-BREF Quality of Life Questionnaire, and the Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale (DERS), display significant, consistent correlations in the expected direction. We conclude that the SWLS is a reliable and valid instrument to use for evaluating the cognitive sphere of subjective well-being in Chile's adult population.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To describe and analyze values obtained from the application of the Child Health and Illness Profile-Adolescent Edition (CHIP-AE) in school chilean adolescents. Method: The questionnaire was applied to a sample of 531 school adolescents of Antofagasta (249 were men and 282 women), with a mean of age of 15.44 years. Means and deciles for each of the domains and subdomains of the instrument, separated by sex and range of age were calculated. Results: Men presented significantly highest median level of satisfaction and resistance (p < 0.01 y p < 0.05) and women highest score in welfare (p < 0.01). By ge 16 to 18 vs 13 to 15 years old group, had significantly highest scores in welfare and resistance (p < 0.001 and p < 0,05), and less in risk and performance (p < 0.05 and p < 0.05, respectively). Conclusion: Results are not different for spanish study, except on welfare were men obtained lower scores and women highest. These results can be use as comparison pattern in longitudinal studies and to compare with others populations or interventions studies in adolescent health.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to build and evaluate the psychometric properties of a scale to assess factors related to adherence in patients with cancer. In a sample of 120 patients from the Oncology Service from Hospital Clínico Regional de Antofagasta, we applied the questionnaire developed and previously validated in a pilot sample in similar patients. The internal consistency and factor structure of the questionnaire, and the relationship between the dimensions was assessed. According to the results, the scale has an alpha greater than 0.9, both overall and in various dimensions, and a factor structure consistent with the theoretical factors chosen. The research concluded that the scale is constructed can become a useful prognostic tool for use in cancer patients.

ABSTRACT

The concept of quality of life has begun to be used increasingly in the field of health assessments or as a measure of well-being. Despite this, there is no single definition or a complete difference from other similar concepts often being misused. This paper presents a theoretical concept and a classification of the different models of definitions, including a proposed model based on cognitive assessment. They also develop major problems confronting research in the area of quality of life.

ABSTRACT

It is assessed the properties of an instrument to detect risk factors for the attempt of committing suicide in 500 students attending high school (mean age 16.5 years). Proposed four-factor solution (suicidal behavior, satisfaction, sense of life, and negative affection) accounts for a 58 % of the variance. Internal consistency for the factors and for the total scale is good (Cronbach's Alpha is 0.95 for the total scale). Regression analyses suggest that the best predictive variable for the "attempt-of-committing-suicide" behavior corresponds to suicidal behaviors (suicidal ideation and planning). The scale shows suitable psychometric properties to assess the risk for the attempt of committing suicide, differentiating between those who have made attempts of committing suicide and those who do not.
